Dividend Payout Ratio

The payout ratio shows what percentage of a company's earnings goes toward dividends. A ratio of 60% means the company pays out 60 cents of every dollar earned. Lower ratios suggest room to grow or sustain dividends, while ratios above 100% mean the company is paying more than it earns — which usually isn't sustainable.
