Capital Gains Tax

Capital gains tax is the tax you owe when you sell an investment for more than you paid. In the US, gains on assets held over one year qualify for long-term rates (0%, 15%, or 20% depending on income), while gains on assets held one year or less are taxed as ordinary income. Tax-loss harvesting — selling losing positions to offset gains — is one of the most effective ways to reduce this tax legally.
