Total Return

Total return captures everything you earn from an investment — price appreciation plus dividends and interest. A stock might only go up 3% in price, but if it also paid a 4% dividend, your total return is 7%. Focusing only on price gains can make dividend stocks look underwhelming when they're actually delivering strong results.
